Your Complete List of 2017 Academy Award Winners

Last night gave way to the 2017 Academy Awards, a wild night full of unpredictable moments - of which certainly the Best Picture snafu that's going to be remembered for decades to come was the biggest. But just a few assorted thoughts to add to the pile:
- Suicide Squad has won an Oscar. Granted, it was for makeup and hairstyling, which it does indeed have a lot of that, but it was clear to me that Star Trek Beyond (a movie I'm deeply ambivalent about) was the deserving winner. Instead, we are now cursed with the notion of "Oscar winning Suicide Squad".
- Damien Chazelle, at 32, is the first Best Director winner to be younger than me. Oy.
- On the acting front, very happy about Viola Davis winning finally (she's the only good thing about Fences, in my opinion), elated about Mahershala Ali's huge breakout this past year, and have mixed feelings about Emma Stone's win. I think Natalie Portman, unfortunately, fell victim to campaigning or a lack thereof. Casey Affleck's win comes with a not insignificant amount of controversy giving the troubling abuse allegations that have circled around him in recent months, but his performance was easily the best of the nominees.
- Speaking of, Manchester by the Sea won Best Original Screenplay, which I can't complain about despite my ongoing hope that The Lobster might pull out a surprise victory.
- One day, Mica Levi will get her due in Best Score...one day.
- Moonlight is this best film of the past year, and I'm glad it was awarded as such. I'm sad it had to occur under those very unusual circumstances, which kind of deflated the moment for Barry Jenkins and company. But! They still won, and that really just made my night.
