The Ten Most Noteworthy Items From DC's January 2016 Solicits

DC Comics' December solicits were marked by a number of cancellations from the much heralded over the Summer "DC You" line-wide relaunch. A critically successful endeavor that never the less had trouble attracting readers in the early going, many were wondering where the hammer might fall next.

While January 2016 sees a number of new titles launch, there are no other cancellations on the horizon currently. Fans of those DC titles that are under the 20k threshold can throw your confetti now! But let's turn our focus to the New Year, and the most eye-catching releases for this coming January:

Dark Knight III heads towards the half-way point:
While we still know nothing about the plot of this Miller-Azzarello-Kubert-Janson collaboration to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of The Dark Knight (Returns), issue 3 sees the story hit its almost half-way point before breaking in February for the John Romita Jr illustrated Dark Knight prequel one-shot.
Also, the mini-comic will be drawn by Miller's two-time collaborator Geof Darrow. Now that's an exciting bit of news!

Green Lantern EdgeGreen Lantern: The Lost Army makes way for Edge of Oblivion
While The Lost Army was a terribly underrated book I thought, its end was quietly announced last month. In its stead, we see the return of Tom Taylor (the writer behind the huge hit Injustice: Gods Among Us comic tie-in) along with Green Lantern: Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver. I have a feeling this book will move significantly more units on that pedigree alone.

LEGEND-WW-1-ac726A new Wonder Woman title!
With Sensation Comics having been taken away from Diana fans, many had worried that there might be another all-ages appropriate replacement. Those concerns were for naught as The Legend of Wonder Woman, a new origin tale, with The Last Unicorn's Renae De Liz on as writer/artist. According to De Liz, this story will not tie in to any existing New 52 continuity, but will instead be based on the classic Wonder Woman origin tale, with its own twists, assuredly.

Two new mini-series to keep an eye on:
Announced a few months back, Poison Ivy and Katana were poised as 2016 debuts, with the latter bringing back DC legend Mike W. Barr on one of the characters that he himself created. Since then, that title has become a double-sized offering to coincide with the upcoming Suicide Squad film, adding in Deadshot written by Brian Buccellato, with art by Diogenes Neves on the Katana side and Viktor Bogdanovic and Richard Friend on the Deadshot chapters.
Conversely, January also sees the launch of a new Poison Ivy mini-series by Amy Chu and Clay Mann, which looks to focus on the day to day life of Pamela Isley. This is a nice new angle to tackle for the Gotham villain, I look forward to seeing where it goes.

As Dr. Pamela Isley, she joins the prestigious plant sciences department at Gotham Botanical Gardens, but things quickly get complicated when a fellow scientist is murdered and it looks like the work of Ivy. Don’t miss the start of this new 6-issue miniseries!

Two of the stars of next year’s highly anticipated action movie break out in their own solo adventures in this extra-sized, 6-issue miniseries!
First, in a story by Brian Buccellato, Viktor Bogdanovic and Richard Friend, Deadshot is on the run, taking on a series of new contracts, and re-establishing himself as the world’s most deadly marksman. But things are about to get complicated for Floyd Lawton when a figure from his past threatens to expose a dark secret…and Deadshot gets word of his next target: Lex Luthor!
Then, writer Mike W. Barr returns to the character he co-created in “Katana, Cult of the Kobra,” with art by Diogenes Neves. Katana needs to know more about Soultaker’s origin if she’s going to have any hope of controlling the sword instead of falling under its influence. Dr. Helga Jace, a Markovian astrophysicist, may be able to shed some light—but before Katana can get the info, Kobra’s forces attack!

omega-men08-TH-02-0ab2aI'm not dead yet! I'm feeling better!
Arguably, DC's best title, The Omega Men got a reprieve from last month's scheduled cancellation after a huge fan outcry online. Tom King and Barnaby Bagenda will now get their full 12 issue run in what may end up being quite a retailer perennial. It's been THAT good so far.

JLA-Cv7-4eb25JUSTL-Cv48-R1-3e573The Justice League books ramp things up!
Since the DC You launch, I've got to admit, I've really enjoyed both Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok's Justice League and Bryan Hitch's Justice League of America. Two books, telling two very different world shattering stories, but they've been a blast and maybe the best that two JL related titles have been in quite some time. The Darkseid/Fourth World related story has especially brought out the best in Johns, as focusing on Wonder Woman has seemingly provided a whole new sense of energy for his storytelling.

BM-Cv48-22f5eBatman keeps chugging along
There's been no title that's been more consistent since 2011 arguably than Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman. It's solid superheroing month in and month out, with the prettiest color palette the Caped Crusader has ever had. This continues the on-going Mr. Bloom/Gordon as Batman story-arc that's provided some nice upending of the Gotham status quo.

EGYPT-TP-ec472Milligan's Egypt gets a long awaited reprint:
I still maintain that Peter Milligan is one of the great underrated talents of the Vertigo era. His reputation should be cemented for Rogan Gosh and Enigma alone, but Egypt finally being back in print should help matters significantly. It's a creator at the height of his powers working with some great artistic talent. I can't recommend it enough. Plus, Mummies.

Vert-SFXPOP-Cv4-9b06bAnd while we're on the subject, there's a new Vertigo Quarterly:
I've quite enjoyed the latest round of Vertigo Quarterlies, perhaps even more so than the previous color-based efforts. With stories by Christian Ward, Howard Chaykin, Jonathan Case and more, don't let this one slip you by.

VERTIGO SFX #4
Written and illustrated by CHRISTIAN WARD, JONATHAN CASE, LEILA DEL DUCA, JORDIE BELLAIRE, HOWARD CHAYKIN, JED DOUGHERTY, EMMA NEEDELL, ALE GARZA, CAVAN SCOTT, SAMANTHA SHANNON, KATE PERKINS, JODY HOUSER, NATHAN FOX and others

On sale JANUARY 27 • 80 pg, FC, $7.99 US • MATURE READERS
Vertigo’s latest anthology series goes out with a BANG! Quite a few of them, in fact. The last issue of SFX gathers short stories inspired by the sound of gunfire, the popping of balloons, the kick of a drum and even the origin of the universe itself. It doesn’t get any bigger than that!
