GeekRecs: Comics Releasing The Week Of 5/27/15

We know walking into your local comic shop or browsing the new titles on Comixology can be harrowing, particularly with the rising prices of comics. The GeekRex team feels your pain, so that's why each week two members of our team will collaborate and highlight the "must-buys" of  every Wednesday, and we'll make sure we keep the tab under 20 bucks.

This Week's Team: Kyle and Shane

material #1Material #1 - $3.50

I love pretty much everything Ales Kot does, from Secret Avengers to Zero (easily one of my top books of the 2010's thus far), so this will surely prove no different.  Material looks to return to the wide-ranging ensemble cast style of his critically acclaimed earlier work like Change, but as with everything written by Kot, it's impossible to pin down any of his titles into one particular box and that's why I find him to be such a refreshing read every time out. I already know what will be on top of my modest pile tomorrow. It should be on top of yours as well.

sandman overture #5The Sandman: Overture #5 - $3.99

The biggest problem with Overture is that it's been so long since the last chapter, I don't remember what happened in the previous issue, much less anything before that. But, to its benefit, Williams' work is so gorgeous that its hard to argue with re-reading the four issues that came before in order to catch up. It's Neil Gaiman's second to last issue of Sandman, if I was a betting man, I'd say you're probably going to read it.

Convergence: Shazam! #2 - $3.99

There have been A LOT of tie-ins to DC's Convergence.  If your local comic shop is like mine, you have probably faced a new arrivals wall of almost nothing but titles related to the event.  It can be a bit intimidating if you're not sure where to start.  No worries...Convergence: Shazam! is the only one you need pick up.  Taking the fun of the Captain Marvel family to Convergence, this issue sees their story wrap up as they must face Gotham by Gaslight Batman in order for their world to live.  None of the other tie-ins came close to the fun of the first issue...expect no different from this one.

All-New Hawkeye #3 - $3.99

Have you been reading Jeff Lemire's relaunch of Hawkeye?  If not, you must not be a big fan of amazing comics.  Not only has Lemire taken the strong foundation of Matt Fraction's work on the series and gone on to tell an even stronger story of his own, but Ramon Perez's art has been just as stunning.  The way the dual narrative of Clint and Kate's mission and Clint's past with his brother have intertwined as made for two fantastic issues which read far too quickly.  I shouldn't have to convince you to get this.  Pick up #3 this week and see what we've all been gushing about.

Total Price: $15.47

No graphic novel pick this week!
