GeekRecs: Comics Releasing on 3/4/15

We know walking into your local comic shop or browsing the new titles on Comixology can be harrowing, particularly with the rising prices of comics. The GeekRex team feels your pain, so that's why each week two members of our team will collaborate and highlight the "must-buys" of every Wednesday, and we'll make sure we keep the tab under 20 bucks.

This Week's Team: Kyle and Shane

Supreme Blue Rose # 7 - $2.99

Warren Ellis and Tula Lotay's beautiful meditation on comic characters undergoing a universal retcon reaches its end, and much like Brandon Graham's Prophet and Ales Kot's Zero, I expect this will join the pile of Image books that I need to re-read in order to feel like I have something approaching a full-grasp of the storytelling on display. But even in my first, much more casual read-through, Lotay's attention grabbing, life-like rendering and Ellis' high concept science fiction immediately highlighted to me that I was reading something special. It's the one book where I literally cannot predict where it's going to go. Bring on the finale!

All-New Hawkeye #1 - $3.99

Where one series ends, another begins...or relaunches rather. Yet, this is a strange situation, as the previous Matt Fraction run of Hawkeye has not concluded and won't do so until about April. Nevertheless, Marvel is pushing forward with the new Jeff Lemire and Ramon K. Perez era, and as a big fan of his Green Arrow run, Lemire is the perfect choice for the Clint Barton's on-going adventures. I'm going to at least give it an issue or two, and hopefully the one big mainstay of my ever dwindling Marvel pull will remain as such. I expect a slight more gazey-tone, if it's anything like his Essex County, but a change of pace isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Princess Leia #1 - $3.99

Thus far, Marvel's offerings in the Star Wars universe have been met with mixed reactions from the Geek Rex crew as well as comic fans abroad.  Nevertheless, we get our third series in as many months this week with the debut of Mark Waid and Terry Dodson's Priness Leia.  As with the other two series in this line, this book takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, though, based on the description and preview pages, this series may take place closer to Episode IV than the others currently on-going.  Further exploring Leia's feelings about her home planet being destroyed is probably the most interesting way to go with this character as it is something hardly dealt with in the films.  While this is just a mini-series, we won't blame you for waiting for trade, but this creative team is too good to ignore.

Descender #1 - $2.99

Another Jeff Lemire #1 for you to check out this week!  As you should already know by now, Image is our favorite publisher here at Geek Rex, and having talent like Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen on a new indie book from this company is more than enough for us to snatch this one up.  Couple that with an intriguing story dealing with a robot trying to find his way in a world that has outlawed robots, and you have the groundwork for a fun space opera among the many Image already has going.  Oh...and did we mention that Descender already has a movie in the works?  Yeah...this one is a must read.

Big Man Plans #1 - $3.50

Yes, another Image book starting this week for you to pick up.  Though this one is also a mini-series, $3.50 ain't a bad price to try something and then wait for trade.  In all the demand for more diversity in comics, little people are rarely (if ever) brought up in that conversation.  Leave it to Eric Powell and Tim Weisch to fill that void.  A crime drama with a murder myster featuring the "most marginalized in society"?  This one could be great (we hope!).  Given that Powell gave us the awesomely fun comic The Goon, expect this one to have some humor as well as heart.

Total Price: $17.46
