We know walking into your local comic shop or browsing the new titles on Comixology can be harrowing, particularly with the rising prices of comics. The GeekRex team feels your pain, so that's why each week two members of our team will collaborate and highlight the "must-buys" of every Wednesday, and we'll make sure we keep the tab under 20 bucks. Props to MultiversityComics for coming up with the great idea–we hope you like our spin on it!
This Week's Team: Shane and Cal
Batman & Robin #40 - $2.99
No other book in the Bat-family at DC has had to be as creative in the New 52 as Batman & Robin. When Grant Morrison decides to kill off half your team, you not only have to find a way to make your book last until said character can be brought back, but your title has to go through some major changes. With DC about to take a break for a while, this issue is going to be the penultimate story for Bruce and Damian (an annual will finish it all off next week). See the end of an era as a super powered Damian joins the Justice League.
Catwoman #40 - $2.99
I'm just going to keep putting this one on here until you start buying it, because Genevieve Valentine and Garry Brown are bringing one of the powerhouse opening arcs of the New 52 to a close with this issue. After the character's transition from superantiheroine to crime boss in Batman Eternal, Valentine and Brown approached the character with a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic and an attempt to bring an emotional authenticity to Selina Kyle that's been lacking for years. Just read it, nerds.
Multiversity: Ultra Comics #1 - $4.99
Here we go. The penultimate chapter in perhaps the greatest comic DC has published in the last 5 years. Before returning to our team of inter-universal superheroes, we take one last stop at a part of the DC multiverse...our world. Yes, we have not only finally arrived at our own universe dealing with this threat to the multiverse, but this is also the comic we have been teased about since the very beginning. The cover to this issue has been showing up in every issue thus far, making the hype for this chapter go through the roof. Time to see what all the fuss is about.
PastAways #1 - $3.99
Matt Kindt has a talent for making preposterous premises feel fascinating and real. In PastAways, he has a ridiculous sci-fi premise - a group of time travelers from the far future stranded in 2015, defending us from a rift in time-space they accidentally caused. Kindt's sci-fi work is often engaging and unpredictable, and with art from the reliably kinetic Scott Kollins, PastAways will almost assuredly be worth checking out.
The Valiant #4 (of 4) - $3.99
After the immense creative success of The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage, Valiant continued their revitalization campaign by letting Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, and Paolo Rivera do whatever they wanted with their toybox. And they have done a lot. The Valiant is absolutely gorgeous, a surprisingly quiet event that has managed to make something very large feel surprisingly personal.

Pick of the Week
Big, Hard Sex Criminals
Written by Matt Fraction, Illustrated by Chip Zdarsky
It's no secret that we here at GeekRex enjoy Sex Criminals, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's surprisingly heartfelt sex comedy. The book is, to my mind, one of the strongest character-driven books out there, particularly as we delve into Suzie and Jon's inner lives, struggles with depression, and more. While I'm not always enamored with the pair's sense of humor, I still find Sex Criminals to be one of the most reliably enjoyable reads each month, and a big part of that is the way Fraction and Zdarsky take these characters and their situation seriously... while still, yes, making ridiculous, expansive dick jokes. With Big Hard Sex Criminals, the pair releases the first ten issues of the series in a hardcover volume that you will never, ever be able to read in public, but you should almost certainly own regardless.
You can purchase Big Hard Sex Criminals today in comic shops and bookstores everywhere. Or, if you really care about us at GeekRex (or want the snazzy discount), you can pre-order it on Amazon.com by clicking here!
