Neill Blomkamp is the go-to helmer for "activist sci-fi" film-making. His District 9, a parable for apartheid and race relations, received rave reviews and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards that year. Elysium, his follow-up, which focused on the plight of the have-nots and was a not too veiled metaphor for the Affordable Care Act, did not fare as well with the public or critics. I loved both. So his latest, Chappie, which stars Sharlto Copley as a robot who learns to become his own man, at least has my interest.
Here's the first trailer for the film, which releases March 6, 2015.
