Variety is now reporting that Robert Downey Jr. will be bringing his Iron Man suit and general snark to the untitled third Captain America.
The word is that Captain America 3 will be an adaptation of the "Civil War" storyline, which pitted Iron Man against Cap in a tale that attempted to capture the zeitgeist and paranoia of the early 2000's. Their feud centering on a piece of legislation that Stark supports called the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal themselves to the US Government. Cap opposes it on the grounds of civil liberties violations and chaos ensues that eventually leads to his death. Certainly this take will be a good deal softer on the political subtext, but the outcomes may very well be the same.
Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest reports that the film may very well be subtitled either "Fallen Son" or "Civil War", and that Downey will be a co-star of the film rather than a cameo. This movie will be a full-on Steve Rogers/Tony Stark ethical battle, and maybe a physical one at some point.
This move will basically kick off the next real phase of Marvel's over-arching storyline, and you can imagine that a weakened and split Avengers will be a perfect time for a certain Mad Titan, who is looking for some powerful gems, to come to Earth.
No wonder Warner Bros moved Batman v Superman off that date.
Captain America 3, which we might as well start looking at as the next Avengers film, hits May 6, 2016.
