Well, we sort of called this, just a little too early. But according to a report from Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch has entered final negotiations to the play the title role in Doctor Strange.
Marvel flirted pretty hard with Joaquin Phoenix for the part, and almost had a deal done for announcement at Comic Con, but when that went south at the 11th hour, they moved on to Plan B, which was apparently Cumberbatch all along.
I had assumed if Marvel waited too long, Cumberbatch's price tag might grow too high, especially given the Oscar heat that's all over him for The Imitation Game. But, instead, Marvel moved fast and now he's the lead in what could be another big challenge of a project for the studio. Doctor Strange is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson, with a script from Jon Spaihts for a 2016 release.
